PLATES helps eliminate school meal debt so every Alaska student can eat with dignity.

PLATES is a statewide Alaska nonprofit dedicated to eliminating school meal debt so every student can eat with dignity. We partner directly with districts to relieve unpaid meal balances, support school nutrition programs, and bring visibility to an issue that has long been overlooked. By filling the statewide data gap and connecting donors to the communities they care about, PLATES helps schools focus on feeding kids instead of managing debt. Every dollar we raise goes toward strengthening school meal access and ensuring that no child in Alaska is denied a warm, welcoming meal. At the beginning of this school year, estimates indicate that 31,030 children in Alaska are food insecure and that the statewide unpaid meal debt is $17,232,680.

Federal changes to SNAP and the Community Eligibility Provision are expected to push unpaid meal debt even higher. As SNAP eligibility tightens, fewer families are directly certified for free school meals. At the same time, CEP adjustments mean fewer schools will qualify to offer meals at no charge, leaving more children suddenly responsible for paid meal prices their families cannot absorb. The result is a growing number of students entering the lunch line already in debt — a burden that ripples through entire communities. Schools face rising balances they cannot sustain, families face increased financial strain, and children face the stigma and instability that come with inconsistent access to nutritious meals.

Unpaid meal debt doesn’t just show up on a school’s balance sheet — it shows up in the cafeteria line. When a child’s account runs out, some are turned away from receiving a hot meal, and others are given a substitute meal that may not be nutritious, instantly signaling to their peers that something is wrong. These moments create stigma, disrupt learning for the rest of the day, and force school nutrition staff into heartbreaking decisions no one should ever have to make. Unpaid meal debt is not just an administrative issue; it is a barrier to dignity, nutrition, and belonging for the students who need support the most.
