About PLATES

PLATES is an Alaska‑based nonprofit dedicated to ensuring every student has access to a nutritious school meal, free from stigma or financial barriers. We believe that no child should ever be denied a meal or singled out because of their family’s circumstances. By partnering with school districts, families, and community supporters, PLATES works to eliminate school meal debt, close funding gaps, and strengthen the systems that keep kids fed.

PLATES helps Alaska school districts address unpaid meal debt through a mix of grants and community‑hosted fundraisers. By partnering directly with districts, we ensure that funds raised go toward paying off existing lunch balances for students in need. Each grant or fundraiser is designed to relieve schools of the financial strain meal debt creates, while strengthening community connections around shared responsibility for student nutrition. Through this model, PLATES turns local generosity into tangible support — helping every child eat with dignity and every district focus on learning, not debt.

Our work is rooted in decades of experience in Alaska’s child nutrition programs. We understand the unique challenges faced by both rural and urban districts — from high food costs and supply chain limitations to the complexities of USDA requirements. PLATES was created to bridge these gaps with practical, community‑driven solutions. We help districts access grants, support fundraising efforts, and build sustainable meal programs that reflect the needs of Alaska’s diverse communities.

Meal debt is more than a financial issue; it’s a dignity issue. When families struggle, children often carry the burden. PLATES steps in to ensure that every student can eat with dignity each day. Through fundraising, partnerships, and public awareness, we provide direct support to districts so they can focus on feeding students, not managing debt.

Every plate served represents more than a meal — it represents dignity, opportunity, and the belief that all children deserve to learn on a full stomach. PLATES exists to make that belief a reality across Alaska, one school and one student at a time.
